([{"type":"0","id":"tFCxLKFgkok","title":"Are Amyworms Invading Your North Texas Lawn? - trial","author":"Village Green Lawn & Landscape","author2":"Village Green Lawn & Landscape","duration":"2:04","description":"This year has been a strange one weather-wise, so it should come as no surprise that we are getting reports of armyworms invading North Texas lawns. We had an outbreak of these in the fall of 2018. Pretty much every bermuda lawn had them. This year isn`t as bad as 2018, but we have seen them in many of our bermuda yards. So, what caused them, and what do all these armyworms do to lawns? Armyworms love summer rains, which we`ve had plenty of this year. They cause short-term damage to lawns and landscapes by chewing the leaves off of the plants. Armyworms don`t like St. Augustine, but if they are in a bermuda lawn, they can leave it looking like a lawnmower scalped it on the lowest setting in a matter of days. The good news is your grass isn`t dead. It`s just cut back, and it will eventually fill back in. It may look bad for some time, and the armyworms are creepy, but there`s no long-term damage. The treatment for armyworms is to spray an insecticide such as Bifenthrin or wait for them to pass. Our July has been cool and wet, so most lawns in the area are lush and green as we head into August (which is not typical.) In today’s video I`ll share with you everything we’ve been seeing in our customer’s lawns, as well as some great takeaways about the importance of proper watering. There is one crucial thing I bring up toward the end of my mid-summer lawn update. It is about chinch bugs which are, in my opinion, the biggest threat to North Texas lawns. We’re heading into the time of year when we see less rain and temperatures will get hot, and lawns become dry. This is the kind of weather chinch bugs thrive in, and make no mistake, they can destroy your yard. So many Ken has recorded a few videos for our `Best Plants Series.` Today we wanted to show you Oakleaf Hydrangea. We love this plant and its beautiful white blooms. As the blooms start to fade, they turn a nice brown color that stands out, and in the fall, it has lovely red foliage. It is a drought-tolerant hydrangea, although you have to water it a bit more the first year but after that, not much. We like to use it up against a home or a corner in our landscape projects. This plant is deciduous, so it is good to have something evergreen around it as it will lose its leaves. If you are looking for a beautiful shade-loving plant for your landscape, it is hard to beat the Oakleaf Hydrangea. ([{"type":"0","id":"YG86RRQ--DQ","title":"How Do You Get Rid of Nutsedge in Your North Texas Lawn? - trial","author":"Village Green Lawn & Landscape","author2":"Village Green Lawn & Landscape","duration":"1:36","description":"Nutsedge is a weed we see a lot of in the summer months in North Texas. It is a dark-green leafed weed that looks a lot like grass that is sticking straight up. But nutsedge isn`t a grass even though it is usually mistaken for a grassy weed. This confuses homeowners who try and treat it with a grassy weed product that does nothing. If you look closely at or feel nutsedge, you`ll notice the leaf isn`t flat, and it is triangular – that`s what makes it different from a grassy weed (they have flat-bladed leaves.) Another annoying trait of nutsedge is that it grows remarkably fast once cut (which drives homeowners nuts!) So how do you get rid of nutsedge? The truth is there isn`t a product that kills it. And trying to pull it up by the roots is not a good idea because nutsedge has nuts attached to the roots. You can pull up the first one, but if you don`t get the second one, and in our North Texas clay soil, you rarely get the second one, you will end up splitting it, resulting in even more nutsedge. The best tip is to go with a product that will stunt it (hopefully for the season.) I discuss these products in today`s video to stop nutsedge from growing (hopefully for the season.) If you are tired of messing with nutsedge and other weeds, be sure to check out our affordable fertilization and weed control plans (https://www.villagegreen-inc.com/fertilization-and-weed-control/) With over 40 years of experience in North Dallas, we know Village Green can help you achieve the lawn of your dreams at a very affordable price. ([{"type":"0","id":"4nb8uoTT_WI","title":"A Bucket Can Help You Understand How Much Should You Be Watering Your Lawn this Summer - trial","author":"Village Green Lawn & Landscape","author2":"Village Green Lawn & Landscape","duration":"2:21","description":"How much should you be watering your lawn this summer in North Texas is a question we get asked a lot? The short answer is roughly an hour per week per zone, assuming you are using a standard sprinkler spray head. Where do we get that number? Imagine placing a bucket full of water in the middle of your lawn in full sun. If you came back and checked that bucket after a week, you`d find that it has lost about an inch of water. A lawn is no different. Your lawn loses about an inch of water per week during the summer. We recommend an hour per work per zone because a standard spray sprinkler head takes about an hour to put out an inch of water. When we ask people how long they are watering in the summer, we generally hear for about 30 minutes which is not long enough. Consider that bucket in the middle of the lawn if we are only adding half of an inch per week (what a standard spray sprinkler head will put out in 30 minutes) while losing an inch per week when we come back at the end of the month, the bucket will have a lot less water. It won`t be empty. But it won`t be enough to keep your lawn thriving through our hot summer months. As summer progresses, your soil will get progressively dryer, making it difficult for the grassroots to reach down into your soil to get to the water. If your sprinkler system has rotary heads, you want to be watering about 50% to double the time of standard spray sprinkler heads since rotary heads have to cover twice the area to deliver the same amount of water. So many Ken has recorded a `Best Plants Series.` Today we wanted to show you one of our favorite plants to use, the Vitex Tree. The Vitex gets asked about a lot in late spring and summer when it is blooming. We love the Vitex Tree because it is Texas tough. It is what we like to call flame-proof. It does get large (wide,) so make sure you put in a spot with some space. It doesn`t need much maintenance. All you need to do is prune off the suckers it will want to grow at the bottom and let the top grow. If you don`t trim the top, it will grow into a beautiful shape. The weed, which is a perennial, is called Dallisgrass. This nasty weed is perennial, which means it comes from a root and cannot be controlled by a pre-emergent. Your best option for a large patch of Dallisgrass is to apply Roundup and then re-sod the area. If you find a small patch of Dallisgrass in your lawn, your best course of action is to dig it up because Dallisgrass is a spreader. If left unattended, it will spread and eventually choke out your Bermuda and St. Augustine.
