Giving Back: Swim Across America

My wife Debbie will be participating in Swim Across America again this year. Swim Across America is a great group that funds cancer research, clinical trials and patient programs by hosting charity swims. Debbie normally participates by swimming in the event but recently had a minor surgery and was unable to participate the day of the swim so she participated virtually by kayaking earlier this year. If you’d like to learn more or donate to her team you can visit the Swim Across America site.

Amyworms Have Invaded North Texas

Armyworms have invaded North Texas. We have been getting a lot of calls from concerned customers wondering if their lawns are dead. In today’s update, I’ll show you a yard that has sustained armyworm damage.

[640],shadow=true,start=,stop=

So, what caused them, and what do all these armyworms do to lawns? Armyworms love summer rains, which we’ve had plenty of this year. They cause short-term damage to lawns and landscapes by chewing the leaves off of the plants. Armyworms don’t like St. Augustine, but if they are in a bermuda lawn, they can leave it looking like a lawnmower scalped it on the lowest setting in a matter of days.

The good news is your grass isn’t dead. It’s just cut back, and it will eventually fill back in. It may look bad for some time, and the armyworms are creepy, but there’s no long-term damage.

The treatment for armyworms is to spray an insecticide such as Bifenthrin or wait for them to pass.

What To Do If You Have Leaf Cutter Caterpillars

We recently featured the Canna Lily as one of our picks for our Best Plants Series.

The Cana Lily is a great choice for a customer who is looking for tropical looking plant for their landscape. They come in a variety of colors (both their blooms and leaves.) They also work well in certain spaces (where you need a tall vertical plant.)

But one of the downsides of the Canna Lily is you can get leaf cutter caterpillars which can make the leaves look ugly. In this video I’ll show you the damage leaf cutters can cause and how to get rid of them.

Landscape Spotlight: April’s Plano Patio Project

April contacted Village Green for help creating an upgraded low-maintenance landscape for her Plano patio home. April’s backyard is tiny by anyone’s standard. And many people believe that means it would be too small to justify a landscape. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Patio homes benefit from an incredible landscape because every square inch is typically seen and on display.

As you can see from the photos, we delivered on an incredible looking landscape that maximizes the space we had available while delivering on her request for low maintenance by our plant selections, including dwarf plants like giant liriope, carex grass, and heuchera. These plants will stay under one foot but add great color. We combined those dwarf plants with semi-dwarf plants, obsession nandinas, and kaleidoscope abelia. They get two or three feet tall. Next, we added river rock around the base of her magnolia tree to add an important dash of texture and cover up the tree’s exposed roots.

April was thrilled with her new landscape’s final results and so happy with Hannah and her landscape team that she took the time to sing our praises on Google. As a locally owned and operated family business, nothing helps us more than when a customer is kind enough to share their great experience working with Village Green.

Thank you, April, for your business and for allowing us to share your landscape.

The ‘Understory’ Tree That is One Of Our All-Time-Favorites

We get many questions from customers on what our favorite plants to use in North Texas are. So many that we created our “Best Plants Series” to showcase our list.

Today we wanted to show you the Japanese Maple. It has to be one of my all-time favorite trees. Japanese Maples are what we call an understory tree. That means they like to be underneath another tree.

Ideally, you’d like them to be in the shade so their leaves don’t get crinkly during the heat of our North Texas summer.

They can do ok in the sun, but keep in as much shade as you can if at all possible. They can grow to be quite tall, but they are slow growers. Their bright red leaves make this a spectacularly graceful tree.

Landscape Spotlight: Tour Matt’s New Project in Allen

This project was our second for Matt, who needed some help with the front landscape at his home in Allen. As you can see in the before photos, the house had an older landscape with a severe slope at the entry. The property also had established trees which gave a lot of shade, resulting in a lack of grass that caused drainage issues at the entrance. In addition to those issues, the existing landscape was older and had a tired and worn appearance with plants that required more maintenance than Matt wanted. Since this was our second time working with Matt, he had a good idea of what he wanted, and we quickly worked up our plan, which would include a stunning stone wall to solve the slope and drainage issues and plants that would be low maintenance while giving a lot of color throughout the year. You can learn much more about our plant selections and other details on this project in today’s video.

[640],shadow=true,start=,stop=

I’m happy to report that Matt was very pleased with the final results and Hannah and her Landscape Team. Matt had nothing but great things to say about working with Village Green a second time, from our communication to workmanship, making me super proud of our hard-working Landscape Crew.

Thank you, Matt, for being such a great Village Green customer and allowing us to showcase our work with your landscape project.

Best Plants Series – Canna Lilly

We get many questions from customers on what our favorite plants to use in North Texas are. So many Ken has recorded a “Best Plants Series.”

Today we wanted to show you one of our favorite plants to use, the Canna Lily. If a customer is looking for a tropical look in their landscape, our go-to plant is the Canna Lily. They come in different colors (both the blooms and leaves.) One of the downsides of the Canna Lily is you can get leaf cutters which can make the leaves look ugly. That is quite common, and there’s not a lot you can do about it. They are a perennial that will go dormant in the winter and need to be cut back. They will also spread if you don’t contain them. Even with those couple of downsides, if you want a colorful tropical plant, especially in a landscape around a pool, it’s hard to beat the Canna Lily.

The Importance of Being Vigilant About Drought Stress & Chinch Bugs This August

As I’ve mentioned, weather-wise, 2021 has been one strange year. From record-setting cold in February to what for us was a very mild June and July, we seem to have finally got our summer heat in August. In over forty years, I can’t recall a year where our summer heat started this late. But now that it is has arrived, we’re noticing many lawns are beginning to dry out, which can quickly turn into drought stress. This is a severe concern for lawns in our area as we head into August. We find that two-thirds of the lawn issues we see in the field are the result of under-watering. This is because a person isn’t watering long enough. Either because their sprinkler system isn’t set correctly, or they have unknown sprinkler system issues. It doesn’t take long in this type of heat for a lawn to develop drought stress, leading to a lot of lawn-related problems. The most serious by far is chinch bug damage (you can read more about that below.) How do you know if you have drought stress? These quick videos can help you diagnose a problem in your Bermuda or St. Augustine lawn has issues (or give us a call at 972-495-6690.)
