Liz and Tom fought the change at first and tried sodding many times, but ultimately they realized it was impractical and contacted Village Green to find a shady lawn solution. Working with our landscape architect, David Daigle, we created a tremendous shade-loving landscape design to extend their front yard landscape to cover the grass-challenged areas. Previously we had installed a beautiful stone border that we didn`t want to lose, so we left it in place and installed Arizona river rock in front of it (6 tons!). To frame the home, we used Pringle Yews, which gets about 4` tall, and used Creme Demint Pittosporums, a small creme-colored shrub to add some contrast under their windows. Liz and Tim love their new landscape, so much so that. Liz and Tim love their updated landscape. Liz told us she likes to stand in front of her home and take it all in! Liz also said that our Landscape Team of Hannah, Luis, and Juan were great. They accommodated anything Liz needed to be done, including placing her Moss Boulders exactly where she wanted them. Liz went on to say that Hannah did a great job of communicating during the project, letting them know who was going to be doing the tasks and when the work would happen. In the end, the best compliment came in the form of their 5-star review on Google. `Owner Ken Hyatt and the entire team at Village Green are fantastic! Village Green has maintained our lawn and landscaping for over 20 years, much to our satisfaction. So many Ken has recorded a `Best Plants Series.` Today we wanted to show you one of our favorite plants to use, the Dwarf Mexican Petunia. It is another favorite because it is what we like to call a flame-proof plant. The hotter and dryer it gets, the happier it becomes. It will eventually grow to be about a foot or so tall and will fill in. The one thing you have to watch out for is it spreading more than wanted (the non-dwarf variety of this plant is very aggressive and like bamboo.) If you need a dwarf plant to put in the foreground of a landscape with some nice color, you should consider the Dwarf Mexican Petunia. Japanese Maples are what we call an understory tree. That means they like to be underneath another tree. Ideally, you`d like them to be in the shade so their leaves don`t get crinkly during the heat of summer. They can do ok in the sun, but keep in as much shade as possible if at all possible. They can grow to be quite tall, but they are slow growers. They drop their red leaves in the winter, making this a spectacularly graceful tree. As you can see in the before photos, the house had an older landscape with a severe slope at the entry. The property also had established trees which gave a lot of shade, resulting in a lack of grass that causes drainage issues at the entrance. In addition to those issues, the existing landscape was older and had a tired and worn appearance with plants that required more maintenance than Matt wanted. Since this was our second time working with Matt, he had a good idea of what he wanted, and we quickly worked up our plan, which would include a stunning stone wall to solve the slope and drainage issues and plants that would be low maintenance while giving a lot of color throughout the year. You can learn much more about our plant selections and other details on this project in today`s video. I`m happy to report that Matt was very pleased with the final results and Hannah and her Landscape Team.
