Check Out Scott & Sue’s Low Maintenance Landscape

Scott and Sue wanted an easy-to-maintain landscape with nice color, which informed our plant selections. As you’ll see in this video tour, all the plants we used are low maintenance and easy to take care of – they don’t need to be trimmed much and are both heat and cold tolerant.

Thank you, Scott, and Sue, for allowing us to work with you on your landscape and allowing us to showcase our work.

Purple Winter Creeper – One of Best Plants to use in North Texas

We get many questions from customers on what our favorite plants to use in North Texas are. So we have recorded a “Best Plants for North Texas Series.”

Today we wanted to show you one of our favorite ground covers. Purple Winter Creeper is a plant we use in our landscapes because it does fine in the shade and sun. It also fills in nicely and tends to be healthier than the popular Asian Jasmine ground cover. Another benefit is that rabbits tend to leave this Purple Winter Creeper alone (they love to eat Asian Jasmine!) Finally, as the name implies, this plant turns a beautiful purple, which adds a nice extra pop of color during winter.

This is How Much You Should Water Your Lawn This Summer

Summer officially arrives in North Texas on June 21st which means it is time to get your sprinkler system ready for summer watering.

In summer, your soil loses the most water, and we recommend watering roughly an hour per week per zone in full sun.

We recommend that you water in ten-minute bursts two days per week at 2 a.m, 4 a.m., and 6 a.m. during the summer.

DOWNLOAD WATERING GUIDE

We recommend watering at these times because it is cooler, which means less evaporation. There is also less wind that can blow the water onto your driveway, sidewalk, patio, or street. Also, keep in mind that many of the newer sprinkler controllers have a seasonal adjustment which is easy to use with our watering guidelines. Finally, if your lawn has a lot of shade, you can cut your watering to about a fourth of what we recommend and be fine.

Important Note for Rotary Head Sprinklers and Drip Systems:
If you have rotary head sprinklers (they slowly turn and send out long streams of water), we recommend running twice as long as you would regular sprinklers since it takes them longer to put out the same amount of water. Drip Zones (drip systems work by maintaining a level of moisture in the soil.) We recommend that they run daily or close to it (roughly 10 minutes per day in the summer.) Since various drip lines water slightly differently, it is essential to pay attention to your beds to ensure they get the appropriate amount of water.

Early Summer Lawn Update for North Texas

The recipe for a healthy lawn is pretty basic. The ingredients are sun, water, and food (fertilizer.) Where things get tricky is with our weather in North Texas. Founded in 1980, Village Green has been through many summer seasons in North Texas. And what we’ve learned over the years is it is imperative to make sure your sprinkler system is ready and in peak performance for our hot and dry summer months.

If it is not, your lawn will become stressed when our temperatures start hitting the nineties and our conditions become drier. If you want to do it yourself, check out our tips for checking your sprinkler system below. Or better yet, give us a call at 972-495-6990 and let one of our certified sprinkler technicians come out for a system check and help you program your controller for proper summer watering.

We’re also focused on spot treating for summer weeds like crabgrass and nutsedge and treatments for chinch bugs, grubs, and fire ants. We typically don’t see any grub or chinch bug issues in late spring, but now is the time to do preventative measures for both (especially chinch bugs which thrive in our hot, dry months.)

Take a Tour of Eric and Nancy Frisco, Texas Landscape

Eric and Nancy have been Village Green customers for a handful of years, so when it came time to move into their new home, they gave us a call about upgrading the landscape with plants they preferred. The builder had installed the previous landscape, and most of the plant selections were of poor quality and not very attractive, per Eric and Nancy.

After the 2020 winter freeze further damaged their plants, they decided to redo the landscape with more interesting plant selections and more color. As you can see in our video, the front of the home is narrow, so we went with dwarf and semi-dwarf plants. We started with pringle yews on the corners, a 4′ tall evergreen plant with soft needles. We added kaleidoscope abelias under their windows which have lovely yellow foliage with small white blooms and will reach roughly three feet tall. In front of the yews and abelias, we selected a layer of dwarf plants, flirt nandinas, stella d’oro daylilies, and perennial dianthus. These plants add nice color and texture throughout the spring and summer months. We used a brown composite edging for their border, which looks great and is more economical than stone borders and won’t rust as the green steel edging does.

When I checked in to get feedback on how their landscape installation had gone, they told me how delighted they were with the results. They went on to say this about our team, “Hannah is very sensitive to the desires and needs of the customer and accommodates their wishes. She has her heart in it. She wants the customer to be pleased.”

As the Landscape Manager, they added they expected Hannah would be on site to show the team what needed to be done and then drive off but were pleased to see her on the job digging with the rest of the team.

Thank you, Eric and Nancy, for allowing us to work with you on the new landscape and allowing us to showcase our work.

Learn Why Soil Prep is Key for Landscape Plants to Thrive

In a recent landscape project, we shared that our customer asked us if we used a special fertilizer because his plants were growing so fast. Village Green does use fertilizer, but the real secret to our success is that we take the time to prepare the soil properly before installation. Many landscape companies skip this vital part of the process to cut costs and offer a lower price.

Today we wanted to dig deeper into the importance of soil prep. It’s no secret that the soil in North Texas is not plant friendly. In today’s video Hannah, our Landscape Manager, talks about how Village Green handles soil preparation and why it is critical for the success of a new landscape.
