Purple Winter Creeper – One of Best Plants to use in North Texas

We get many questions from customers on what our favorite plants to use in North Texas are. So we have recorded a “Best Plants for North Texas Series.”

Today we wanted to show you one of our favorite ground covers. Purple Winter Creeper is a plant we use in our landscapes because it does fine in the shade and sun. It also fills in nicely and tends to be healthier than the popular Asian Jasmine ground cover. Another benefit is that rabbits tend to leave this Purple Winter Creeper alone (they love to eat Asian Jasmine!) Finally, as the name implies, this plant turns a beautiful purple, which adds a nice extra pop of color during winter.

Spring Watering Guide for North Texas

Spring officially arrives in North Texas on Sunday, March 20 which means it is time to update your sprinkler controller for spring watering.

HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU WATER THIS SPRING?
In spring, your lawn and plants are coming out of dormancy from the winter and your soil needs
consistent watering. One of the biggest mistakes you can make with your lawn’s overall health is to not water properly for the season.

We recommend that you water in 10 minute bursts one day per week at 2 am, 4 am, and 6 am during the spring. Download our watering guide (feel free to share it with family and friends!)

Also, keep in mind that many of the newer sprinkler controllers have a seasonal adjustment which is easy to use with our watering guidelines.

Important Note for Rotary Head Sprinklers and Drip Systems:
If you have rotary head sprinklers (they slowly turn and send out long streams of water), we recommend running twice as long as you would regular sprinklers since it takes them longer to put out the same amount of water. Drip Zones (drip systems work by maintaining a level of moisture in the soil.) We recommend that in the spring they run one day per week for ten-minutes. Since various drip lines water slightly differently, it is important to pay attention to your beds to ensure they get the appropriate amount of water.

Village Green Irrigation Packages!

The Leopard Plant Makes A Great Choice for North Texas Landscapes

We get many questions from customers on what our favorite plants to use in North Texas are. So many Ken has recorded a “Best Plants Series.”

Today we wanted to show you one of our favorite plants to use, the Leopard Plant. The plant in this video is green, but you’ll often find variations with leopard-like spots. The Leopard Plant has an attractive, alien-like leaf. For the most part, Leopard Plant is an evergreen plant. If we have long-term below-freezing weather (like we did in February 2021), they can suffer freeze burn, but they will bounce back. If you want a visually striking plant that does well in the shade, you should consider the Leopard Plant.

The Carissa Holly Made Our Best Plants List

We get many questions from customers on what our favorite plants to use in North Texas are. So many Ken has recorded a “Best Plants Series.”

Today we wanted to show you one of our favorite plants to use, the Carissa Holly. They are an excellent landscape choice because all you have to do is install them and leave them alone. You don’t need to trim the Carissa Holly. Trimming with hedge clippers can make the leaves turn brown. The one thing you need to be careful about is over-watering. It works well in the sun or shade and doesn’t have insect or disease issues. If you need an excellent medium-sized plant, you will be hard-pressed to find a better plant choice than the Carissa Holly.

Best Plants Series – Dwarf Mexican Petunia

We get many questions from customers on what our favorite plants to use in North Texas are. So many Ken has recorded a “Best Plants Series.” Today we wanted to show you one of our favorite plants to use, the Dwarf Mexican Petunia. It is another favorite because it is what we like to call a flame-proof plant. The hotter and dryer it gets, the happier it becomes. It will eventually grow to be about a foot or so tall and will fill in. The one thing you have to watch out for is it spreading more than wanted (the non-dwarf variety of this plant is very aggressive and like bamboo.) If you need a dwarf plant to put in the foreground of a landscape with some nice color, you should consider the Dwarf Mexican Petunia.

What To Do If You Have Leaf Cutter Caterpillars

We recently featured the Canna Lily as one of our picks for our Best Plants Series.

The Cana Lily is a great choice for a customer who is looking for tropical looking plant for their landscape. They come in a variety of colors (both their blooms and leaves.) They also work well in certain spaces (where you need a tall vertical plant.)

But one of the downsides of the Canna Lily is you can get leaf cutter caterpillars which can make the leaves look ugly. In this video I’ll show you the damage leaf cutters can cause and how to get rid of them.
