Best Plants Series – Canna Lilly

We get many questions from customers on what our favorite plants to use in North Texas are. So many Ken has recorded a “Best Plants Series.”

Today we wanted to show you one of our favorite plants to use, the Canna Lily. If a customer is looking for a tropical look in their landscape, our go-to plant is the Canna Lily. They come in different colors (both the blooms and leaves.) One of the downsides of the Canna Lily is you can get leaf cutters which can make the leaves look ugly. That is quite common, and there’s not a lot you can do about it. They are a perennial that will go dormant in the winter and need to be cut back. They will also spread if you don’t contain them. Even with those couple of downsides, if you want a colorful tropical plant, especially in a landscape around a pool, it’s hard to beat the Canna Lily.

Best Plants Series – Oakleaf Hydrangea

Today we wanted to show you Oakleaf Hydrangea. We love this plant and its beautiful white blooms. As the blooms start to fade, they turn a nice brown color that stands out, and in the fall, it has lovely red foliage. It is a drought-tolerant hydrangea, although you have to water it a bit more the first year but after that, not much.

We like to use it up against a home or a corner in our landscape projects. This plant is deciduous, so it is good to have something evergreen around it as it will lose its leaves. If you are looking for a beautiful shade-loving plant for your landscape, it is hard to beat the Oakleaf Hydrangea.

The Pretty Tree that is Texas Tough and Flame-Proof

Today I wanted to show you one of our favorite plants to use, the Vitex Tree. The Vitex gets a lot of interest and generates a lot of questions at this time of year because of its colorful blooms.

[640],shadow=true,start=,stop=

We love the Vitex Tree because it is what I like to call a flame-proof plant. This tree is Texas tough and can handle the summer heat of North Texas. The Vitex Tree does get large (and wide.) It is important to make sure you place it in a space with some space to grow. Beyond that it doesn’t need much maintenance. All you need to do is prune off the suckers it will want to grow at the bottom and leave the top alone to allow it grow into a beautiful shape.

Go for the Gold with this Shade Loving Plant

Today I wanted to show you Gold Dust Aucuba. As you can see in the video, it gets its name from the color of the leaves.

[640],shadow=true,start=,stop=

Gold Dust Aucuba loves the shade (it can’t take the sun.) In shady spots, it flourishes and does very well in both the heat and cold.

Gold Dust Aucuba is excellent to use in dark spots in your landscape. We often use it on the outside corner of a home’s landscape or where we need a bright spot in a shady landscape.

Best Plants Series Featuring Stella de Oro Daylily

Today we wanted to put the spotlight on one of our favorite plants to use, the Stella de Oro Daylily.

We love using it in our landscape projects because it does fine in full sun and is a reliable bloomer. It is flameproof, which makes it suitable for North Texas during our blistering summer months.

We also like to use these in front of other plants to make a nice lower layer (they will also go dormant in our winter months.)

Best Plants Series – Little Gem Magnolia Tree

We get many questions from customers on what our favorite plants to use in North Texas are. So many Ken has recorded a few videos for our “Best Plants Series.”

Today we wanted to show you one of our favorite trees to plant around swimming pools and along fence lines as a screen. The Little Gem Magnolia is great for this because it doesn’t get too tall or wide, but does the trick when you need something to screen between your lawn and a neighbor. Another nice feature is the blooms it produces.
