Take a Tour of Robert’s West Plano Landscape

Our latest landscape project was for Robert in West Plano. Robert has worked with Village Green for five years and is a lawn health plan customer. We also helped Robert with irrigation repair, landscape, and drainage work, so he knew who to call when it was time to update his front landscape to repair winter 2021 freeze damage!

Unfortunately, Robert’s freeze damage was severe, other than the border and Japanese Maples, and we were starting from scratch.

[640],shadow=true,start=,stop=

Since the first step to any successful landscape is the design plan, Hannah and her team went to work placing larger plants on the outside corners to frame Robert’s house. Hannah and her team did this with Edward Goucher Abelias, whose soft white blooms reach about four feet tall. To add color and texture, Hannah added a layer of dwarf plants (including holly ferns, purple heuchera, and leopard plants.)

Hannah has worked with Robert on a few projects, and Robert was impressed yet again by Hannah and her landscape team. Robert shared that he was impressed that Hannah rolled up her sleeves and did so much of the work herself and did an excellent job explaining what we were doing each step of the way, and was willing to do anything to make things right.

A few weeks after the installation, we followed up with Robert to make sure he was happy and that things were going well with the new landscape. Robert told us everything was great and asked what fertilizer we used since his plants were thriving and had grown faster than expected. Village Green does use fertilizer, but the real secret to our success is that we take the time to prepare the soil properly before installation. Many landscape companies skip this vital part of the process to cut costs and offer a lower price. The thing to remember is that landscapes are like most things in life. You get what you pay for.

If you have a project in mind for 2022, we would love the opportunity to earn your business.

Take a Tour of Stacy’s Frisco Landscape

Today we’re featuring one of our latest landscape projects for Stacy in Frisco. This home is stunning, but unfortunately, Stacy’s established landscape suffered freeze damage and needed an update befitting the home’s exterior.

Stacy’s landscape had a lot of formally manicured shrubs that had outgrown their locations, so we blended elements of the new landscape with existing pieces she wanted to keep. To frame the home, we used variegated pittosporums, which have creme-colored leaves and reach about 5′ tall. As we worked our way across, we used more medium-sized plants such as abelias and anthony waterer spireas, which have lovely blooms. We used flirt nandina to frame the home’s entry, which is one of our favorite choices because it stays low and turns a beautiful red during our North Texas winter. We also used red yucca, which adds a contemporary feel with the bonus of having nice red blooms during the summer. We used dwarf plants such as giant liriope and perennial dianthus to add a layer in the front. To tie it all together, we installed a band of river rock. Stacy loved working with our Landscape Team of Hannah, Juan, and Manny. She said they were a pleasure to work with and that Village Green made the entire process easy. Stacy added that she especially loved the communication throughout the whole process and that our team would do a thorough clean-up at the end of each workday.

I want to thank Stacy for trusting us with her project and letting us take a video tour of her landscape.

If you are thinking of a landscape project or update give us a no-obligation call to discuss your project. Our landscapes start at $2,500 and go up to $100,000 + on large scale projects.

Landscape Spotlight: Michelle & Craig’s Family Friendly North Plano Project

Michelle and Craig contacted us to help reimagine their large, open North Plano backyard. The couple had a good idea of what they wanted in their project. It was essential to keep as much of their large lawn as possible so their six and nine-year-old children could enjoy the space (or a pool could be installed in the future.) They also wanted to create an area in their landscape for a vegetable garden and space for Craig’s mower and tools. They also wanted to soften their fence line, create some privacy from the neighbors, and upgrade their outdoor patio space.

As you can see in the before and after photos, the design will help cover their expansive fence with plants that will mature and screen the neighbor’s homes, creating a sense of privacy in the backyard. To soften the extensive fence, we used a combination of savannah holly, needlepoint hollies, and abelias.

[640],shadow=true,start=,stop=

Michelle and Craig also wanted more outdoor living space, so we expanded the patio area with a new stamped concrete area that looks beautiful. Surrounding it, we used compact nandinas, lambs’ ear, irises, and dwarf Mexican petunias to complement and frame the patio.

I want to thank Michelle and Craig for trusting us with their project and for taking the time to send me the following note about our team.

“I’m certain you know this already, but I believe you have some great employees in Hannah, Juan, and Manny. They’re very friendly, welcoming of any questions or concerns, and were very professional throughout the entire 3-week job. I’m not sure one could ask for better ambassadors or representatives of your business.”  Michelle and Craig

Landscape Spotlight: Brandon & Lindsay’s Maintenance-Free West Plano Landscape

Like many of our customers, Brandon and Lindsay discovered Village Green via a Google search. They, like so many in North Texas, had suffered some freeze damage in February 2021. As has been the case for many, the freeze allowed them to rethink their landscape design and update things that have bugged them for years.

Brandon and Lindsay had clear goals, and they wanted to re-do their front landscape and make it as maintenance-free as possible. They also wanted to replace their old border with a masoned, stone border (they even had sample photos to share with me to illustrate what they wanted.) Then another important but less sexy ask was to fix some issues with their downspouts which were causing problems being so close to their foundation.

[640],shadow=true,start=,stop=

As you can see in the video, we removed their dead plants and the large, overcrowded hollies and replaced them with plants requiring no trimming. It doesn’t get more maintenance-free than that! We added kaleidoscope abelias for medium-sized, evergreen colors and used obsession nandina to frame the entry with a dash of a reddish color. To give some color and layering, we used giant liriope, perennial dianthus, and purple heuchera.

Brandon and Lindsay were delighted with our stonemason, Andres, and his work with the stone border. They also loved working with Hannah and her landscape team and have been even more impressed with our overall post-project follow-up. It is one of the things that sets us apart. When we install a landscape, we stop by and check in a few weeks later to make sure everything is going well. Our goal is to let our customers enjoy their landscape worry-free and not have to worry about it (that’s our job!)

I want to thank Brandon and Lindsay for trusting us with their landscape and for taking the time to leave their nice review on Google, where they first found Village Green!

Brandon & Lindsay’s Review
“Village green was excellent to work with. During the freeze, we lost a decent amount of bushes in our front landscaping. Ken came out, had specific plants in mind to put back, and wrote up a proposal with pictures of the plants. They also built a border wall the entire length of the landscaped area. Andres and his team, which Village Green subcontracted to do the wall, did an excellent job and made it look exactly as we expected. Their work was efficient and seems to be of very high quality. Then, Hannah with Village Green exceeded our expectations by fully listening to us on what we wanted, moved plants and borders around as desired, and efficiently managed everyone to get the job done. The whole crew went above and beyond. Throughout the entire process, the whole team was very easy to talk to, and we were easily able to communicate our exact vision. They executed it perfectly. My only complaint was they couldn’t start earlier! Understandable, though, as everyone in the metroplex was trying to landscape at the same time. Ultimately, great work, and I was very pleased with the outcome.”

Landscape Spotlight: Jeff in West Plano

Jeff is another customer that discovered Village Green via Google. Like many in North Texas, Jeff had lost some plants in February during our epic deep freeze. Jeff didn’t want to start his landscape from scratch and redo his entire front, so he tasked us with replacing the lost plants with new ones that would work well with the plants he liked and had survived the freeze.

Jeff had lost some dwarf pittosporum and Indian hawthorns, which we replaced with a combination of kaleidoscope abelia and giant liriope. We went with these plants because they will add more color and texture to his landscape.

Another requirement for Jeff was updating his landscape with plants that wouldn’t ultimately cover his windows and obstruct his view. To accomplish this, we selected flirt nandina, a small, feathery plant that will turn red in the winter, plus some yellow carex grass to add a different texture element.

In front of the right-hand wall, Jeff wanted a plant that would screen the wall without getting too tall, so we went with compact nandina, which will get tall enough to screen the wall without covering it completely.

In the end, Jeff was very pleased with our landscape work and said Hannah and her landscape team had done everything they could to make sure he was happy, including offering several different varieties of plants.

A big thank you to Jeff for choosing Village Green for his updated landscape and allowing us to showcase our work on his project. If you enjoy these updates and don’t want to miss them in the future, subscribe to our YouTube channel.

A Refreshing Update for Jan and John’s West Plano Landscape

Like many of our customers, Jan and John found Village Green on a Google search. When we had our first meeting, it was evident that Jan and John were well-informed homeowners who knew their landscape. Like many customers, they loved certain parts of their landscape (in their case, they loved the left side with the holly ferns and taxus) but wanted to improve other areas that needed to be updated and or repaired from our February deep freeze.

Smartly they didn’t want to start from scratch and asked us to take what they had that worked and improve upon the rest.

There’s a fine art to updating an existing landscape. The trick being to make sure the new elements complement versus overpower the established landscape. Editing is also essential, and less is more when adding plants into an existing design, so it doesn’t become cluttered and busy.

In landscape design, it is essential to have repeated patterns to draw the eye. Since they already had liriope on the left, we added giant liriope to the areas we updated. The left also had spreading plum yews, so we used upright pringle yews to frame their entry and give more continuity to the landscape. In addition to that, we added pale yellow carex grass and dianthus for a dash of color.

[640],shadow=true,start=,stop=

Jan and John have a beautiful, natural landscape that will be low maintenance for them in the future. All of the plants we used did fine this past February during our 100-year freeze and will do equally well in our blazing summer months.

In the end, Jan and John were pleased with our landscape work and praised Hannah and her team. In their own words: “Hannah and her crew did a very nice job and also a great job explaining it all to us.”

A big thank you to Jan and John for choosing Village Green for their updated landscape and allowing us to showcase our work on their project.

A Landscape Solution For Jeff’s Drainage & Shady Lawn Challenges

We first started working with Jeff in 2017 and have done everything from lawn care, sprinkler care and several landscape projects. Our latest landscape project was to help solve a significant drainage problem that was made worse by the lack of grass in a shady part of Jeff’s front yard.

Jeff had a downspout that was dumping too much water into his lawn which was combined with the bare dirt from lack of grass caused by shade created a muddy mess on his driveway.

Hannah, our landscape manager, had the perfect solution in her simple yet effective design, which she illustrated for Jeff with notes and photos so he would understand the plan. Village Green added river rock next to the drive and then attached the problem downspout to a pipe that released the water into the river rock. This solution allows the rock to break the force of the water and allow it to disperse onto the driveway without hauling dirt with it. In addition, we added shade-loving plants such as Purple Heuchera and Ice Plants to add color and texture in the area where the grass wasn’t growing because of the excessive shade. Finally, we installed a flagstone walkway to make it easy to access the side of Jeff’s home.

[640],shadow=true,start=,stop=

Jeff loves the update and the work Hannah and her landscape crew did. Not only does his front landscape look great, but it also solved his muddy mess drainage issues.

A Shady Lawn Landscape Update for Liz and Tim

Liz and Tim are longtime Village Green customers (20 years!), and over that time, their trees have matured, creating a shady lawn that made it hard to grow healthy grass. Liz and Tom fought the change at first and tried sodding many times, but ultimately they realized it was impractical and contacted Village Green to find a shady lawn solution. Working with our landscape architect, David Daigle, we created a tremendous shade-loving landscape design to extend their front yard landscape to cover the grass-challenged areas. Previously we had installed a beautiful stone border that we didn’t want to lose, so we left it in place and installed Arizona river rock in front of it (6 tons!).

[640],shadow=true,start=,stop=

To frame the home, we used Pringle Yews, which gets about 4′ tall, and used Creme Demint Pittosporums, a small creme-colored shrub to add some contrast under their windows. Liz and Tim love their new landscape, so much so that.

Liz and Tim love their updated landscape. Liz told us she likes to stand in front of her home and take it all in! Liz also said that our Landscape Team of Hannah, Luis, and Juan were great. They accommodated anything Liz needed to be done, including placing her Moss Boulders exactly where she wanted them. Liz went on to say that Hannah did a great job of communicating during the project, letting them know who was going to be doing the tasks and when the work would happen.

In the end, the best compliment came in the form of their 5-star review on Google.

“Owner Ken Hyatt and the entire team at Village Green are fantastic! Village Green has maintained our lawn and landscaping for over 20 years, much to our satisfaction. In addition, we have had several major landscaping projects completed by Ken and his team over the years, all of which have been executed beautifully. The team just completed a major front yard re-do which has exceeded our expectations! We are incredibly pleased with Village Green and highly recommend them.”

Landscape Spotlight: April’s Plano Patio Project

April contacted Village Green for help creating an upgraded low-maintenance landscape for her Plano patio home. April’s backyard is tiny by anyone’s standard. And many people believe that means it would be too small to justify a landscape. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Patio homes benefit from an incredible landscape because every square inch is typically seen and on display.

As you can see from the photos, we delivered on an incredible looking landscape that maximizes the space we had available while delivering on her request for low maintenance by our plant selections, including dwarf plants like giant liriope, carex grass, and heuchera. These plants will stay under one foot but add great color. We combined those dwarf plants with semi-dwarf plants, obsession nandinas, and kaleidoscope abelia. They get two or three feet tall. Next, we added river rock around the base of her magnolia tree to add an important dash of texture and cover up the tree’s exposed roots.

April was thrilled with her new landscape’s final results and so happy with Hannah and her landscape team that she took the time to sing our praises on Google. As a locally owned and operated family business, nothing helps us more than when a customer is kind enough to share their great experience working with Village Green.

Thank you, April, for your business and for allowing us to share your landscape.

Landscape Spotlight: Tour Matt’s New Project in Allen

This project was our second for Matt, who needed some help with the front landscape at his home in Allen. As you can see in the before photos, the house had an older landscape with a severe slope at the entry. The property also had established trees which gave a lot of shade, resulting in a lack of grass that caused drainage issues at the entrance. In addition to those issues, the existing landscape was older and had a tired and worn appearance with plants that required more maintenance than Matt wanted. Since this was our second time working with Matt, he had a good idea of what he wanted, and we quickly worked up our plan, which would include a stunning stone wall to solve the slope and drainage issues and plants that would be low maintenance while giving a lot of color throughout the year. You can learn much more about our plant selections and other details on this project in today’s video.

[640],shadow=true,start=,stop=

I’m happy to report that Matt was very pleased with the final results and Hannah and her Landscape Team. Matt had nothing but great things to say about working with Village Green a second time, from our communication to workmanship, making me super proud of our hard-working Landscape Crew.

Thank you, Matt, for being such a great Village Green customer and allowing us to showcase our work with your landscape project.
